1:54 p.m and open it to commendations have accommodation um I would like to note the boys and girls cross country team that the boys that won uh won their 1C state championship meet over this past weekend which is basically the equivalent although not drug comparisons but the equivalent to the football team’s success from last year um the Voice who competed um and this goes by place but they you know wasn’t first place but Brian Thompson Isaac gross Harrison key David deconstanzo uh Brian blestow Arrow uh thank you and Gabe moranian

2:40 um all finished quite well um the the um highest time on that was 18 minutes and 14 seconds so that’s quite fast um and they all they have a state race this weekend so best of luck to them and then the girls finished nine um with an outstanding finish of second place by Mari O’Connell and she will compete in all states this weekend as well so pretty much awesome that I’m stealing Thunder a little bit but great job to our cross country teams congratulations any other accommodations Allison or Megan

3:21 yeah I’d like to accommodation to our Metro director Cajun Johnson for the Ruby Bridges swap that we did this week she brought the uh idea to the district and it was very successful we got some nice coverage in the uh current people were having over a thousand students participating in the bridges walk and uh she will be doing some virtual assemblies for our students and so now they have some context

3:57 firing back to the walk in different contexts throughout the day and really bringing it in and integrating into their learning throughout the day so that brings us to our student representative yes a couple weeks ago the National Honor Society we launched books tutoring program and the link is available on the MHS website and in Mr Bowers weekly update if you’re interested uh the national French Honor Society hosted national French week from November to November 9th and it encouraged French immersion through media speaking we had a musical tournament and it culminated with an Eiffel Tower Building Company uh the second quarter began this week on November 14th

4:42 November 14th November 14th as Dr Bucky mentioned the high school held the Ruby Bridges walk on November 14th in honorable Bridges uh it was a little chilly but it was definitely cool to hear about um someone who is so influential in who I had never heard before uh the high school had Alex training um on November 16th the freshman class is holding a dodgeball tournament fundraiser on November 22nd at 3 MB MHS Field House uh marbleheads acapella is holding its annual Sink free diver concert on November 22nd at 7 pm in the United

5:25 the uh the high school will have a pep rally on Wednesday on November 23rd in preparation for the Thanksgiving football game and in some class news the junior class handed out Powderpuff merchandise and they also have a muffin fundraiser with Uranus on November 21st particularly uh the sophomore class had a shooties pie fundraiser until November 13th senior classes had Powder Puff Spirit Week well this week and the powder Cup game will be this Saturday November 19th at swanston at 10 A.M the senior class will also have a senior brunch on the day after November 20th uh as Sarah mentioned previously congratulations to the cross country teams of their outstanding

7:32 presentation in a forum last spring I heard somebody say our m-pass scores aren’t great and I thought that’s a pretty blanket statement for a singular data point in the district and then last week the budget form that same point was raised that our MCAS scores aren’t great and it’s such a gut punch to our Educators for one high stakes test to be what is for this in essence judge for the work that they’re doing and it really isn’t fair so I want to arm the school committee the data so that when somebody makes a statement like that because I’m fairly confident that Matt box would put his uh grade eight some of those scores up against any Middle School in the

8:17 state so tonight I have asked uh ma’am to give kind of a 30 000 foot overview of trend analysis over 2019 2021 2022 and she’ll share some comparative data with the dart districts that the state Compares us to but because we have heard that normal doesn’t necessarily believe that those are our comparative districts she’s dug into some of the ones that we have heard that people compare us to so ma’am give this and then in our December meetings the principals will do a deep dive into the grade level specific data so that you can ask questions and then we hear something like our end passwords

9:28 so here we go so the District of Marblehead so how this this presentation this evening is like Dr Bucky has explained it’s a 30 000 foot view so we are looking down on our district and we are learning about how the students who have been tested um in grades three through 12 through 10 have done on the MCAS test

10:02 so MCAS stands for the Massachusetts comprehensive assessment system and it digs into three content areas English language arts Math and Science Technology and Engineering so the data that I’m going to share today includes data from our third grade at the brown and Glover are in pla and map our fourth fifth and sixth grade ELA math from the village and are it also includes our fifth grade Science and Technology and Engineering we also test our seventh and 8th graders in pla and math and also our eighth grade students in science Technology and

10:48 Engineering and our 10th graders also take the sign the ELA and map and house however the um sign I couldn’t get somebody to confirm that the data that I’m sharing tonight includes the high school science status so I I didn’t do that as part of this explanation so it’s in ninth grade it’s correct possibly not or probably not probably not okay thanks so if I’m just going to refresh your memory as far as where we have been in the last few years with mcaps so our third through eighth grade students in 2019 took a full the full webcast test

11:33 as in Prior years same in the 10th grade in 2020 as you remember there were no tests administered in 2021 our third through eighth grade had a modified tests are temporary typical texts are in 2022 last spring we were back to usual and we were tested in all of our grades and it was the full Administration there are two components to mcat’s analysis one is how students are doing the proficiency so how are they doing in terms of

12:20 understanding State Standards at or above proficiency and student growth so student growth percentiles are shared to give parents and teachers an idea of how individual students are doing um in comparison to the performance of like peers

12:44 the student wrote oh sorry Frank if you could just go back this year the state has provided the comfort and in in same to districts yes with proficiency go ahead and make comparisons from 2022 to 2021 skipping over 2020 and then going to 2019. it was comparisons are about where we can’t make valid comparisons to the student growth percentiles the growth percentiles for 2021 are not comparable to 2022 because of as you remember that modified test so there was a different

13:31 formula in different calculations to determine student growth so tonight’s presentation is only going to focus on proficiency and principles will be able to give you a better sense of presentations

13:52 so here’s an overall picture of how our district has did last spring so if you look in the left-hand corner of the screen you’ll see a proficiency number so that proficiency we are at 58.1 proficiency so that means our students of all the students tested in ela last spring in terms of standards-based Assessments we had 58 of our student population exiting that grade level at proficiency or above now when you compare it to the previous year if you look at the bars you can

14:38 look at 2022 we had nine percent of our students Advanced 50 of our students and if you look at 2021 our proficiency um scales were a little bit more advanced so we did dip from from our previous year and then even if you if you go one bar over to the left you can see 2019. so we we did have um from 2022 in the last two years

15:12 however in comparison to our into the state we are 17 above in proficiency

15:21 the student growth percentile there again I’m not going to get into it but with student growth percentiles the same allocate zero to 39 as low growth 40 to 69 as typical growth and 70 to 100 percent as Heights so we are in the typical brokerage would you rather us answer as we go Slide the slide or Wasteland I’m happy to wait for the end I’m happy to go maybe it makes more sense to go as we go okay if you want to so you know we’re we’re doing better than the state Norm yep but we are we’re losing obviously as

16:08 you said we’re losing our proficiencies decreased by 10 and also I noticed our percentile that is exceeding dropped by five uh went from 14 down to nine so that’s a 33 decrease in that and what I think this speaks to is now this is hard impact data of learning loss and why we want investments in learning like this and this is not I don’t see this as a reflection on our faculty I see this as a reflection on clear data of learning loss and also there’s some other data points that kind of support some things as you move later on that I’ll reiterate but um I that

16:55 really jumped out to me one question I have for you is we’re 17 uh we’re 17 above State Norm Ally can you it’s and it just need to be tonight but can you move back with us and let us know what we were above in that state Norm in 21 and 19. to see if we’re increasing our level above State Norm or decreasing that okay that would be really good to have because it it tells our story okay great thank you all right so the next slide represents our math data so we have a 52 percentile amount of proficiency so we have um

17:42 52 of our students exited the 2022 year with at or above proficiency again slight decline there from the year prior and 13 above the state 45 student growth percentiles so in the low um

18:02 we implemented a new math curriculum and it is very common for implementation Gap to occur so I do think this is another nod who are Educators that they were implementing a new curriculum and the decrease year over year was that small I would anticipated

18:31 so here we are with our science um 51 percentile you will not get a growth percentile here because the years are scattered about so we’ve got 51.9 a 10 decline from the previous year and 10 percent

18:56 so here’s the dark data that um Dr Bucky has referenced these are the districts that the state has compared us to in terms of our student body our demographic and programs that are offered so in terms of our like districts designated by the department of Ed this is where we fall in terms of proficiency in student work and just because it’s the idea I’m guessing it’s small for people um so the department of Ed is comparing us with like a Bedford a stone um a data we look pretty lockstep with denim denim um Foxborough Northampton so I know we

19:57 and so this next slide will show you in comparison to the dark districts for math

20:09 and then this next slide is the districts that we commonly hear um parents reference in terms of the um what they’re looking for support and comparison outcomes from districts yes

20:31 it’s not comfortable life well but that’s I think always where we find ourselves and makes that as part of the conversation last year within the override conversations of you know trying to understand this ripping that we usually think we compare ourselves to whereas the Desi which I do think ends up more on par student for student spending but you know what do we want and and is that Jesse Dart demographic um is that for student spending class size things like that yes okay so if we want to which class size is driven by her student spending so if we want to be up

21:17 with the Lexington for Winchester the Wellesley West Ends we need to meet through dark Democrats okay and our next um slide is the math comparison similar districts that we just thought

21:39 so this is my favorite tagline when we’re looking at data data is only as good as what you do with it so a lot of people like to talk about data and dig into data and talk but it’s not about the conversation it’s about what it looks like in practice and what you take back to kids so as we look at our end caps we remember that it is one piece of what drives our instructions so we talk it with our Marblehead teams about triangulation we use our local benchmarks our i-Ready data and classroom consistency to inform how we’re changing the ships that we’re making like um Dr Bucky reference if

22:26 mcast it’s just one one little data point there are so many more complexities to do analysis than our teachers are getting very adapted together and then taking the data and doing that um item and what we refer to as item analysis having data conversations and data chats as teams so this is what it would look like so in the last year and a half Marblehead has established coaching a coaching mom and we have this year brought in that coaching model by incorporating our lead teachers and so now they are getting coaching on going back to their teams and coaching and looking at data so what do we do well

23:12 we’ll take an MCAS standard and look at how did we do what was the performance of our students and pull and tease out the standards that we didn’t do as well as we wished and then what we do is we break it down even further what was the standard how many kids got it correct where where does it fall in the spoken sequence does it need to come earlier do we need to go back to it at the end of the year and start kind of diagnosing maybe where the Breakthrough in construction happened and fold in additional sources so that doesn’t happen the next year so that is really

23:58 where MCAS serves us as a district and as a teaching Community it doesn’t serve kids in terms of labeling them proficient or labeling them Advanced or it serves kids when teachers are looking at the standards and where they can take them instructional and that’s what our team is really getting rid of doing today I’m sorry Kata Kata eight has the lead teachers but such as the high schools working on that model now too

24:31 and so here’s another example of the data the item analysis how you can easily identify um where you are slightly below the state or below the state on the standard and dig into deeper and then pass your your teaching team this is an example of a seventh grade standard um where in our pacing do we analyze the different tones of two articles on similar subjects and if it isn’t until the end of the year or maybe teachers will say well that’s the lesson that we didn’t get to or instructions so there you go so you’ll get a lot more um

25:17 um um surface level information at the from your from your principle so this is the kind of move forward to the committee for any questions

25:35 um no thank you ma’am you know this is that you know I can remember in 2021 um right every year it was when we were pushing back against wanting to actually take the mcats um and you know you coming in and explaining why it was important and what the data could do for us and you know I appreciate having it laid out at this point because like you said um I really like that saying that you know it’s only good it’s what it’s only as good as what you do with it um so it’s it’s important that we don’t let it just sit on shelves and like dust um Megan did you ever hear that yeah thanks and I don’t necessarily have a question but I just want to point out

26:22 that I think Nan this this is really helpful and um we have reported out our MCAS scores before on your right it’s kind of meaningless unless you are going to do something with it and I feel like this what you’ve just laid out in terms of those tangible actions is kind of the culmination of all the work you’ve done since you got here kind of laying that Foundation right like making you know making our curriculum more consistent the scope and sequencing all that foundation work that you have done here has really got us to the point where now we can take that data and do something with it so I just really appreciate this report and all the work you’ve done thank you

27:05 um I so I one of the the pages you put up was the third grade ELA were four percent under the state and then the seventh grade reading we were talking about that you showed that area that we were one percent under the state level of proficiency around the state norm and I think it’s important to note that both of those speak to ELA and it’s no surprise one of the requests we’re going to have right now is an Ela curriculum we don’t currently have an Eli curriculum um so k6 or okay k6 um you know we’ve used foundations but man is that that’s more of an intervention or a robotics program it’s part of comprehensive um dla program but but it’s not yeah so

27:52 you know you hear in towns for instance I believe it was reading they were in a very similar situation same exact programs they were they were relying heavily on foundations to basically fill a gap their Town came in and gave arpa money I think to the tune of well over a million dollars I think was close to two million dollars to the schools to buy in the LA um curriculum for those and so I think this data and what we’re seeing around the state you know in the The Learning loss and the lack the effects of the lack of that curriculum but again this does not speak to our teachers our teachers are doing phenomenal with the tools we’re giving them it speaks to we need to give them more tools

28:38 um so I think data like this is really helpful because it does tell that story and it is a very strong justification and I’m that’s why I’m very happy to hear that’s one of our asks that will that I know you’re working on and Dr Bucky has been talking about with the arbor working group that um that’s great use of funds like that I think it’s what those type of funds were designed for um what time uses and things like that so I I’m just thankful we have you know this data to back up exactly what we’re asking for I I just want to make one um further point that that kind of supports the curriculum are going to be looking at and reviewing I I also want to highlight that this um

29:23 the skill level involved in meeting teachers through data analysis is really comprehensive and the coaching model that we’ve been able to develop in the elementary the teens and without those adults to be able to work and Coach teachers through these um difficult conversations at times um I just want to really give a big shout out to our elementary coaching team and to the lead teachers 7 through 12 that are starting these conversations this year with their teams as well so you know any any staff that we get that supports these kinds of conversations to move instruction will definitely benefit

30:19 um because that can help further dig into that and actually like you said make use of it rather than just look at that right um all right thank you very much for that we’ll be having a couple more things too because what’s sticking out to me sort of you know within these points of the um curriculum and everything is that you know last at last night’s for a second meeting the arbit funds were approved for us to have some after school funds to to look at um learning laws and some summer stuff but I think you know when we look at MCAS data it sort of it paints a broader picture of of larger student needs and so you know to your point about the of actual curriculum that can go through our district I think that’s really important um and you know I hope that

31:04 we’re successful in securing that market funding for that I also think it’s it’s it Bears pointing out that the these third grade um these third grade items on the ELA is that that those kids were in first grade and the first grade as you read you know articles and stuff about different impacts of different levels that was first graders in 2020 who really are supposed to be the most impacted with Lane this could have been our second graders because those are no when everything’s shut down okay yeah yeah um so they would have yeah um so you know I think it just I think it Bears noting that these that sort of again to the to the more in-depth need

31:49 to really remediate and I don’t want to say catch kids up but um you just make sure that there aren’t gaps um um and again like all of this data is really great information for for telling our story it really drop driving what our needs are what our asks are um um budget form follow-up thought exchange yeah um we have uh a good turnout for last week’s budget Forum um we didn’t have good participation in terms of about 10 of the people who walked out and students and participated and I’m sure there are lots more opinions out there so I’d like to honor another

32:36 thought exchange for people to put information forward or what they see priorities literally some of the things that came up during the Forum will probably come up through the exchange again but you can see how the community is feeling about so much

33:02 I just have a question for Dr Bucky about that that’s all right on the thought exchange John um that first one we did you know I think there was great response rate um which you know is really encouraging one of the things that feedback I’ve heard from that though is that it was so broad um and then it was sometimes hard to then navigate through that to make sure that we were getting you know that the data we were getting back was um it was too broad for people right because then you have like 200 responses that you’re trying to go through and no one can get to all 200 so it kind of skews the results so I guess it’s more of a request than a question it’s just to narrow down that thought exchange that we push out so that

33:49 whatever data we get it’s much more specific and then we can actually make decisions based on it thank you I’m glad that we’re going to do that too because it’s changed but um I think you know we’ve heard how difficult it is for people to stand up and speak publicly you know we all know that it’s not an easy skill to develop so I think it’ll be nice for like you said you know spent 10 of our forum and that people that were on there listening and those that couldn’t attend that they don’t have a little bit more more introverted and I fully acknowledge that the date that we posted the night before a long weekend probably wasn’t convenient for everybody

34:39 the fact that it was a Thursday before a long weekend and we had 80 some odd people that that tells me people are are invested in our budget they have opinions they want to hear what’s going on so I am really excited to see what some of the feedback is

34:58 um all right so you have your advisory committee update on you the wellness committee met uh for the first time uh last week Emily was our Wellness representative so Sarah stepped in to attend that meeting but I know Megan might have an interest in Wellness as well you would Express so I don’t know if we want to rotate that person I am I was more so if no one could go I could go but I think you know it would great if Sarah and Megan figured that out and then once we also seat someone we’ll kind of look at everybody’s interests in fossil facilities so a Marblehead head moment the destiny so a Marblehead moment the destiny representative for the wellness committee lives so she attended our first meeting provided some good feedback on next steps we’re looking at

35:45 bonus policy and I think something to the full committee to adopt a revised oh good uh were you able we we attended the mass Association of school committees conference to keep all the keynote speakers each day or vote the majority of the Middle East um in many many of the topics were on social emotional health really where are students and where our staff are and we talked about you know trying to make that a focus this year do you do you see that you might want to bring on some more mental health professionals into that and Megan your hand is up yeah you can finish that conversation and then I’ve got a separate question for doctor I I said the same thing you know about

36:32 tailoring the wellness policy to our district and and one of the slides that the Desi person had mentioned social emotional but our policy does not dig into that at all so I think you know obviously that’s a big one for me so I think yeah being looking towards that because really the point that they got to in that conference is the headline was the children are not okay neither are the adults and they talk about if if you aren’t okay social emotionally and they gave statistics how much you remember how much you retain and draw back later on and it was those statistics are pretty startling that if we don’t give the kids where they need to be and quite frankly the adults as

37:19 well then we can throw all of the extra learning at them but they’re not going to retain it I’m not just put a plug in for the rotary’s mindfulness program that they’re gifting you know on the phone with with one of the embroidery presence today about that program and I just I think that there’s there’s a lot to that and and for me again with the professional mind that I sort of enter in with with these things that to me was was sort of an aha moment around oh this is this is a huge tool in in remediating behavioral skills and and our social emotional cases with our students um one of the keynote presenters we talked about as well I don’t know if

38:10 they’re uh she does executive functioning there I do that she did it for the staff during the day and then the evening opened it up to the public and it every seat was built and there was a lot of take away I think from both parties I I know I still see stuff with my own kids at staff who’s utilizing from those in those professional development and I I still know parents that are using that so we talked about the possibility of bringing in one of those peanut sneakers on this for the staff development piece and also if we can get people that will pretend as well Megan yeah I don’t want to take away from a social emotional conversation because it’s all really valuable and I think you know the wellness committee the point of that is to really focus in on the physical and mental health of our staff

38:57 and students for sure but when we kind of re-kicked off the wellness committee back when Bill was here the focus that year specifically um was around the composting Recycling and you know making sure that we were getting that up and running throughout the district so I do want to make sure that even though that might not be the focus of the current Wellness committee that we see that all the way through and close that Loop so I would love to get an update in a somewhat soon um school committee meeting on where that stands in each school and how like I said we kind of close that Loop and make sure that we’re doing that in every school and then and then make sure the community knows about it too and have a little you know if there’s anything that we still need to do to get that up and

39:43 running in any school that we’ve got an action plan around that and that actually did come up during the meeting um I don’t remember which piece of the context that occurred in but there’s a huge aspect to the lunch programs within the wellness um policy and the wellness committee and so that did get brought up in sort of where that had been a major priority a few years back after the committee um and that it seems like it fits pretty easily in with um with what the well you know for this year I think is going to be very focused not that we can’t do with magnets asking as well but I think very focused on tightening up policy and making sure it’s everything that’s in there is in our schools and in working um and then I think it really sets it up

40:29 nicely for initiatives like that to really take flight I’m glad to hear that the school lunches came up in that meeting more to come I’m sure thanks yes yes um on a positive note the keynote uh addressed that we uh both enjoyed I did recount to the President William James and he’s accepted our invitation we’re just trying to be Amber down the date

41:01 um and then just under District updates um given what’s in the news I think it would be valuable for the committee to hear from our athletic director on what we’re doing around hazing and harassment so the incident in the neighboring District last year and then what’s the news recently I think it’s helpful for our community I did attend the parent last night for winter sports and it is part of the communication that the

41:44 student athlete won last night and um you know Greg’s got some and I had talked recently with Dan about a few things you know just with my the high school hat on and um I think there’s some really positive things going on with our student athletes and um as a parent I had approached Greg earlier in the season about a concern I had and it was a fantastic conversation really just supporting our kids as you know we talk about student athletes and that the student comes first but also using our Athletics as learning tools and and tools for growth and how we can really um you know make our help our kids become really well-rounded individuals so you need to be really nice in the um when he presents can he present on Staffing as well if he has everything

43:16 communication and discussion items Sarah gold had requested some items beyond the agenda so I’m going to just hand this off to you right um so the first one that I requested was the um policy bbbe which is the unexpected term fulfillment and then the Mass General law section to it which is um 411. so this really was taken care of at the slutman’s meeting last night um so I don’t I don’t have much more to say on it I really put it in as a placeholder since we didn’t oh sure yeah um so if you didn’t really didn’t know how the selectment meeting was going to unbelt last night and I wanted to be able to talk about this if that made sense um so do you want me to to read this through or do you want to read it through it I I may have Bridget just because

44:04 this will it’s a lot um but a vacancy has occurred in the school committee due to a resignation effective October 27 2022 the process for filling a vacancy and elected boards is defined by Mass General law and Marblehead School of policy the school committee in the select board will jointly meet to interview applicants and appoint a person to fill the vacancy I’m going to skip the middle that gives names and addresses and how to do that that will all be available on our website the town website is well with media sources and I’ll just go over quickly the Deeds um the data the date of submission will be by 4 pm on November 30th with interviews and appointment to be conducted at a joint meeting on Wednesday December 7th at Abbot mall so again this will be up on our our website
