3:30 um so on November 19th the um MHS had the Powder Puff game uh the girls did who’s a top one but they raised 13 000 for charity so congratulations to them uh the boys have their backs on Thanksgiving with a blowout win versus swamp Scott so congratulations uh the following day November 20th uh the senior class had a class brunch to kick off spirit week which was the following week and uh culminated in a very entertaining pep rally very enjoyed uh the acapella groups held their annual fall concert uh sing Free or Die Hard on November 22nd and they’re also the Carol today there will be Caroline tomorrow and also on Saturday The Freshman Class held a dodgeball

4:16 tournament fundraiser on November 22nd the sophomore class also distributed pies from their shoes fundraiser on November 22nd and they sold 91 pots the fashion Club is holding a winter gear drive for light Bridge North Shore until uh December 5th uh Jefferson Forum which is a community service Club at the high school is holding a toy drive for Pathways for children until December 13th uh Salem State has expanded their dual enrollment program to include MHS and students can currently apply for the spring semester so that’s very exciting and moving forward as well um all grades attended a performance by second act a substance use prevention theater group uh yesterday November 30th um I thought it was an excellent show

5:03 very informative and there will also be a follow-up survey in student focus groups on December 6th the sophomore class is currently planning a December fundraiser and the senior class will have meetings next week to start preparing the procedure

6:57 so John said we’re going to go from about 10 000 feet to about 2 000 feet uh we’re gonna save a grade level um so we’ll work our way through there because I can pull up here do I know are you gonna dance okay um so the next slide so we just want to do a quick reminder about um sort of the interrupted testing schedule we had over the last four years in 2019 we’ve been forecasting 2020 no tests uh 2021 was just uh half of a test for great for Arbor our school uh it’s about our full in the last series so we’ll jump into the next slide so um we’ll start sort of the next slide uh you know overall as we go through this

7:43 veterans did really well last year um our math scores put on the top 12 percent of middle schools who are mean exceeding that’s me um our exceeding expectations it was in the top of 11 and are um not meeting expectations so uh we did really well and this is out of 487 middle schools or 487 schools that give an eighth grade tests that’s how my science of sort of search Ela we did even better we’re top 10 in the state for being exceeding um top eight percent for exceeding expectations and we had the ninth highest student growth percentile State and that’s the important thing that I’ll mention as I go through mine a little bit as soon grow percentile

8:29 um and then tied we were tied for fourth wall should not be an expectation so you know that sort of puts it into perspective of how our students are doing relative to the state so when we take a look at some of these numbers that might have changed over the years uh I want to sort of keep that in mind as we go through this too that relative to say we’re doing very well and in a couple of our subjects extremely um so that said we’ll go to the first grade which is seventh grade ELA and so this is like a pot like a possible one before I go into any of the numbers here and just sort of talk about some of the Hidden data that’s not that we don’t see in some of these numbers what we’re looking at in front of us are 2019 21 22 percent is a median exceeding um we have to remember these These are cross-sectional parts of data so what

9:16 that means is you know those 2019 students are now up here at the high school um as is everybody else there so when we look at this a hidden piece of data you might say oh 61 to 64 to 55. um 55 seems like a drop off um but we are still outsouring the state by 15 points right there um but the thing that’s kind of nice if you take a look and drill into it our seventh graders last year when they were sixth graders so if we take a look at some longitudinal data as sixth graders they averaged about 40 for their student growth percentile for remember is if the five of us that are in this room you know also like 500 and the next year we all scored about

10:03 520 or 5’5 they put us into a scoring group and so your your student growth was sent out Compares you across the state to the students that are in that scoring profiles so you’re not being compared to like hard standards for SGP you’re not being compared to the kids that are just in your school student growth percentile Compares you to students that performed like you did in the past so if we take a look at their sixth grade scores which you know would have put them in 2021. their STP was around 40. when we take a look at this store here in 2022 their STP jumped to 57. so what does that mean it means we’re outgrowing the state we’re going above so 50 is like an average growth so we’re outgrowing the state not only offering

11:05 had had some losses when we move on 21 to 22. so one question this begs is are we identity does this help us identify that the learning loss for all of our students is not equal that some age groups and some grades whether it was developmental whether it was the things they were learning the year that they lost in the pandemic that different students and different grade levels may have felt this differently I think yes and no and that’s that’s a cop-out answer but I can answer it two different ways I think content you’ll see across when I go through all five of this test reports I’m gonna go through I think you see content impact in science more um while I think it’s what we’re seeing

11:50 now sort of like the no what we’re seeing now with the current students we have are more of a skill levels and that would be the students that had fourth grade fifth grade impact and more we’re seeing more of executive functioning sort of challenging um so that’s this current set of an eighth graders and so we’re doing things that we might not have had to do in the past for current seven-day Educators so we’ve identified that we’ve started interventions right like the whole first quarter we checked every single student’s homework agenda every single day every teacher did um so we’re trying to teach those skills as we go through that because we saw a need because the current some of the current secretaries have fourth grade interrupted which is a huge year for developing those executive function skills fourth grade really takes off

12:35 um and then fifth grades a lot of practice of that a lot more work is sort of piles on so those two years yeah and we’re seeing skill more than content and so when we go through these I was going to note that when we get to the science test what you have is a Content interruption but not a skill Interruption so the students that are leaving from the eighth grade still got to experience luckily last year some of the labs and stuff that maybe they missed in the seventh grade you know so that’s that piece that was impacted it’s a little bit of give and take yeah well that’s why I wonder like in there we’ll dig into this later but in their writing are we showing that those just course scores may have sunk in more because writing takes more second functioning in that text our

13:21 writing score isn’t sick personally I mean I can talk about my school our writing score is in sync and the Capstone the eighth grade writing scores where we were literally top of the state um that’s uh no number one two or three for our essays and I’ll get to that so I mean it’s our writing scores at this level uh went through the roof this year in the eighth grade and the seventh grade shows a good growth too so and and I wanna I I do want to sort of come back to the the first slide I started with again this is the entirety of the state having these same

14:04 changes in scores so we can’t take a look at this this is just a Marblehead issue in the moment we’re not turning a Blind Eye of this but we’re also still happy that we’re moving our students forward with their growth percentiles more than the rest of the state you know because our student growth percentiles are positive of the four tests that we’re going to be taking a look at that have student growth percentiles seventh grade English eighth grade math eighth grade English all have huge positive grossful student growth and I got a little thing that’s for seventh grade math so some of the celebrations specifically for seventh grade English for your time for fifth lowest and not meeting um our students with disabilities tied from the 17th highest in the state for meeting and exceeding that’s 17 not 17

14:50 so seventh highest States or our students with disabilities have the seventh highest student growth in the seventh grade in the entire State um our subgroup for high needs High needs if you if you don’t know is a there’s a combination category that has students with disabilities El students and low-income students and that was a 13th highest student growth with state so we’re not just reaching our highest you know Achievers we’re reaching our students that need the assistance to get to that position so the next one in mathematics again we see sort of an up actually from the last one it was 67 53 58 you know again this is these are this is a long two longitudinal data we see different groups of kids every year um we worked high for seventh laws for

15:36 not meeting in the State uh if I did longitudinal these seventh graders in mathematics in the sixth grade had a similar growth so we look at that and say oh similar growth and and that’s you know that’s sort of a flat line this isn’t the only database I ready dad Julie and I had a nice meeting with our already consultant towards the beginning of the year we started delving into our I ready data seventh grade last year had something that he had never seen before us already puts out five categories for students to fall into depending upon their achievement um typically growth leans towards category category one and two so you have sort of like a reverse scale here of your higher Achievers having more growth uh we actually had outstanding growth that was

16:24 consistent almost all five levels almost identical within one or two percentage points he has never seen a great anti-grade move along like that so that was great to see an unlike a moment in time test that’s three Benchmark tests throughout the year current eighth graders that’s our current eighth graders I saw a lot of growth for the entire grade we were excited about that so grade eight is uh is where we start yep so grade eight this is the science one and this is the one that I wanted sort of um identify as you know content and exposure science changed a little bit so you look at these students you know seventh grade was very different for them for science so you know distancing half days um so it was it was a little bit more of

17:11 a challenge and so yeah there there was some less exposure to the science curriculum and that’s what this is coming down to right here do I worry about them in the long run no because they got a good solid eighth grade year a lot of skills uh our teachers communicated as to what we needed to do to sort of backfill a lot of those skills to prepare them to take the biology classes up here so you know scientific method working on a lab doing a lab report managing basic materials all that kind of stuff how to unpack a science textbook all these kind of skills that they need to then hit the hit the ground right here we we did a lot to really communicate between those two grades

23:08 there’s sound again yeah proceed okay I’ll just jump into it we don’t need that so eighth grade math uh as I said we uh we were exceeding the stage by uh 26 points so we all scored our 65 of the meeting exceeding students across the state was only 39 of students that were exceeded so we’re very happy with that and more importantly we saw a tremendous student growth they went from seventh grade with a 41 growth to 64 demonstrated so it was a great year

23:45 um eighth grade ELA is where sorry Matt can I just jump in here um what we see on the screen is just like the Marblehead page is there like a presentation okay can you go back to screen sharing yeah Frank’s working on working on getting it up but in the spirit of proceeding we were because um we all have this in our packets so we’re just gonna let Matt continue and then prank we’ll catch up okay see you yep so you know

24:20 oh okay oh okay um so eighth grade at Ela is where we sort of really hit um hit the ballpark as it says uh our music seating average uh we had 74 of our students either meet or exceed um we had there we go this is a great slide to see um this is the keep going one more

24:42 one more there you go um so we were tied for 11th highest from Beauty and seating um in the state fourth highest for student growth in the state so we had an average student growth of 17. uh we retired for eighth highest exceeding in the state with 24 of our students so nearly a quarter of our students exceeded the state’s expectations and for our essays we have two essays we received everybody receives four grades across those two essays two for um ideas formations ideas two for writing conventions on the essay number two we were third in the state for writing convention and Third Estate for ideas and the essay number one was second in the state for ideas and first

25:28 you know save the writing convention both of our writing Dimensions scores were 90 so that means we earn 90 of our points that’s just it’s a south standard yeah I don’t know what else to say besides outstanding you know the work that our students did the series is a task as approaching the MCAS uh it was just unbelievable and so back in one of everything our teachers did to get them there because it’s not just an eighth grade test it’s the advances in the sixth grade seventh grade eighth grade all through the years there’s been a great I always say the word recovery um but there’s been a great achievement great friends last year in English um and so it’s part of the next steps

26:15 that that we’ve already started working on uh you know a month and a half ago really was was drilling down into um unless this is the next slide which is this question so I thought it was summarize it with you know some of the things that we have done we’ve drilled down into item analysis so we’ve taken a look at where we um where we need to grow still because even though we did really well of 184 questions only 13 that we get outscored by the state so we we did really well relative to the state but still areas that we can focus on there’s still some groups that we could focus on and so those in the areas in which we are conducting our item analysis we planned interventions for students both tier two interventions which include many of things we put in over the last

27:01 couple years or strengthened over the last couple years our academic support you have C uh math literacy really support my map my path uh second function Club so these are also where tier two supports that we have but we also started working on a lot of our tier one supports which is happening in the classroom um some of them are very specific towards certain group of students um some little more General District teaching friends

27:35 um since everything is so it’s great um it’s a way for us to focus on areas Improvement and areas of access that’s sort of where we’re at all the recording questions

27:51 I just want to say I think that’s I mean it’s great to see I think it’s probably more than people wouldn’t be I would hope it would be one of people would be accepting given where these children were in their educational development when the pandemic hit so I just want to commend you for that of course and your you know all the Educators I think it would be great to also harness you know I love the fact that you’re going to continue to dig into the areas of improvement and you acknowledge that nothing’s perfect right but I think also if we can figure out you know harness some of that greatness and and the programs that you developed um and see what can be done how those could be potentially tailored at other grade levels to

28:37 witness that same type of energy in that same type of growth because it clearly seems as though you know you have harnessed that yeah and we had a point to that also is that you know a lot of the standards between sixth grade and eighth grade are cyclical um so we we revisit them multiple times we come back then we stand on them literally the science the science standards are written six to eight um so there is there are many chances through those three years in particular they’re not discounted anything younger but there’s there’s a lot of time within those three years to keep coming back and working on the standards and I think rowing students as we get there so I I don’t want to say eighth grade’s a Capstone or anything like that because

29:23 it’s not they still have to you know obviously head up to the high school but it is it does complete a small three-year Journey they’re taking when it comes to the curriculum I really see those those sixth seventh and eighth grade years of working tightly connected so it’s not just you know we’re not gonna We’re not gonna get 74 you know in every single grade every single year it’s really challenging to do that but what I saw is that positive growth from sixth grade to seventh grade to eighth grade and that’s what we really want to see and then you see all that achievement in the eighth grade it’s really a telling point moving our students at all we’re not just moving them along at a you know we’re moving along substantially uh faster than the rest to say or it’s just

30:09 you know right huge jumps you know when you have a student growth rate of 70 an average student growth rate of 17 that’s that’s outstanding I mean when I say that and it’s not a product of just eighth grade it is a project right but it’s a product of everything that came before so but I think that that’s that speaks to an even bigger point of the way it runs at your school and the connectivity between the three grades we don’t have six friends

30:42 from from that sort of that unit if it has a pandemic I just think that it’s really great how well they work together and that that is something that could be harnessed I think understanding that movement the vertical yeah is just I think that that’s what helps you get to that I would say that’s the factor in getting into that 70 plus percent you know absolutely good we can harness that and figure out how to have more of an efforts um I see Sarah Stand Up Magazine was up and it’s gone so I just want to make sure I give Megan a chance to go if she had wanted to no sir I can go ahead okay so Matt if I’m understanding with the with the science scores in your and your statement about it being cyclical and and sort of you know so learning it in

31:29 sixth grade and then rounding back to it and rounding back to it so that makes sense to me then why those scores in eighth grade were were quite low because those students would have had the biggest disruptions in sixth and seventh grade so my understanding that correctly so so science is a it’s written six to eight that’s a little less cyclical because you know writing you’re working on various things so it’s written six to eight um there are some standards that are committed to but a lot of schools take a look at what they can do six to eight and and cut up the standards that make the most sense for them six to eight all right sorry I misunderstood there oh that’s fine because if you took a look at I went through it kind of quickly but in the slide these little sort of next

32:15 steps is that coordination Village to make sure we’ve got all of our standards straight and you know straight and locked in and this is what we’re going to do this is what they’re going to do and we want to really make sure that you know for example sequences we did last year really match up Titan so we’re not you know there was an example I gave it from another District when I was in another District you know how many times we have to teach the concept of butterflies when we found out butterflies were taught like 14 times you know you don’t need to know that much about butterflies so even you know the scoby sequence work was a great start now we sort of nailed down with Village coordinate ours and theirs and then the next step is installed so that’s that piece that that I think was science and and truly with social studies too because the six to seven social studies you know it doesn’t have a test they’re interlinks because

33:00 they’re both ancient history so it’s it’s okay and then does this and maybe I you know I can wait until Dan talks as well does this does that type of information inform us to where gaps maybe as students are going into the high school next

33:23 yes or no I’ll be honest I would steer more into iready data and achieve it in class you know MCAS is a moment in time um it gives us a moment in time on how they’re doing the standards at that day on those you know and it’s a it’s a long test it’s a bunch of days of testing um I ready is multiple check-ins um multiple tasks that we get for ELA for reading and math um I think that that gives a pretty good idea of where any holes would be and more importantly gives us a more immediate return on how we we fill those anymore you know between the tests they’ll be given you know November and the testing the testing again until really tested again in January so I would I would steer more into that as far as because neither one of those

34:10 tests are truly diagnostic but it it gives us a moment in time

34:21 in that perspective I like the data we get from the outcast but I also understand not only is it just a moment in time it’s a moment in time that the kids hadn’t had in a while and that in and of itself could have caused some of these dips I would assume because these are kids that this this test typically they would have been taking some form of MCAS every year since third grade and then all of a sudden they didn’t for two years and then there is I know my own children I see that anxiety when this test day comes so I I would think that there has to be some of that factored in to a dip a little bit there’s there’s so many factors that we play in these Source what is almost more important to me is that at each

35:07 developmental level and or grade level I almost divert more to developmental level what we think can see and you talked about with the exact functioning is each group of our students you know pre-k through 12. are going to be in a different deficit it’s not as easy as put these kids in school more give them longer school days give them summer Services because each group needs something different and I think the work is happening but I think it’s really going to be really important for all schools particularly you know I’m concerned with our district to identify what each of these levels needs and it sounds like that’s what you’re doing so we can be addressing these individual needs because there’s no one-size-fits

35:52 all because all of these kids were at different developmental levels yeah and you know if we had maybe a you know data an interventionist coach at our school who could really sort of step in and really help out and manage this could be something that you know maybe you’ll see okay the polls in your court there you go um but actually those are the types of things that I mean we just learned at the mass Association of school committee conferences with some of the keynote speakers that it’s really not as easy as one size fits fall just give them more school give them summer like we really need to dig in to see identify what each group needs and if that’s what we need to do that then that’s what we

36:39 need to do then yeah and it’s a it’s and I see that now you know I see that even just within two years so if you take a look like I said in the current pressure that’s what we’re talking about is the ninth graders you know as the eighth grade Source um you know they they had sort of the end of Elementary and some of Middle School interrupted so what they s what they had already digested though was those executive function skills uh learning to study you know that fifth grade year of really learning to sort of study for things and plan out things um sixth grade year a little bit more Independence and then the loss some of the sixth grade year but then they came back to seventh grade and you know our seventh grade teachers took that group even in half days and was just grinding away at them and it really sort of worked because

37:25 they couldn’t manage that a little bit more we’re looking at the seventh graders now not as a deficit but just as like we have to do a little bit more direct learning and so I think every year it’s going to be evaluating what’s coming up evaluating where they’re at and immediately you know we’re not changing our content but we are slightly changing our delivery we are slightly changing um how much we direct instruct some of the executive function skills organization approach to writing no there are some things that we are changing to meet the needs of students content-wise I don’t think you’re seeing the climate change there because since it’s just it’s almost like we’re giving the entire you know grades and tier one interventions already because

38:11 we are we’re we’re meeting them where they’re at but we’re still providing them grade level curriculum Excel so we may see some variants we’ll see variance and we’ll see kids catching up because you know you go to the early grades and you’re talking about learning to read and learning mathematics there’s going to be some outstanding ketchup in the second third and fourth grades that that you know by the time they get back up to us again it’s just going to be the middle 15th again I mean there’s going to be an end to this sort of ripple effect um because there’s going to be catch up you know the kids that we sent up here as freshmen not confident they’re freshers you know I don’t I don’t think they’re they’re sub-freshment or freshmen that couldn’t survive two three years ago they’re freshly

39:07 okay okay ready same presentation all right Matt’s always a tough act to follow so um talk for a long time you did a great job certainly uh awesome work that he does and really when you take a look at things I think even before you get into the data yeah MCAS is a snapshot correct but you need to really put in a perspective of context too so obviously when you look at the data points that we’ll provide they’re really giving a 30 000 foot view it’s still working to dig deep I think the important piece is to realize is that you see the dips across the board right particularly in a meeting and exceeding area um and really when you sit back and

39:53 think about the experience that our students had right and again this is all a whole piece here when you review where our freshmen for example last year taking their biology well the eighth grade year they went to the crazy hybrid year and their seventh grade they’re equivalent hit right and this past year the sophomores that took the MCAS the 22 version they weren’t hybrid the year before which was as we know crazy right we had multiple schedules and really got away from that experiential learning that we’ve been working on for so much that man pointed out that and we we’ve been taking a lot of pride in that right we went back to just you know six foot spacing and and just that piece and I think we’ve lost that touch of the collaboration and the communication all the important

40:38 the important the important um skills that are required for deeper alert right so basically became Sage on the stage and it was survival I’m proud of our teachers for grinding it out and working really hard so I agree with Matt in the sense that content was there but it’s really about that skills right and it’s it’s how you learn right the experiential piece can’t be underestimated and when you look at the 21 group the sophomores that took the test well they benefited from a full year with Matt right and then they had that that covet year right where they got two-thirds of the year with us and then we hit the hybrid piece so so it was interesting to see how this all all played out in many ways so if you go to the next slide Frank so our Ela data

41:24 you can see the progression right where we took a a pretty steady rise up until we hit the really I think the covet that hit in 2022 we dropped our percentage there the good news is that we’re of course 10 higher in the state and then I also broke it down within the Northeast conference I thought it’d be interesting to see the schools that are in our area um the 10 schools and we’re 11 percentage points higher than the average of those schools in ela and our high needs population we’re 10 above the state average so it was certainly enough to celebrate uh but I think the Wonders really for us being deep with our English Department is the specific skills for focus and really that stamina that’s required for not only short answers but the essay writing and I

42:09 agree there is a lot of executive functions organizing and putting together an essay right there’s a lot of skills that are required for that so really looking for the continuity of Grade 9 and 10. you know we’re working to figure out that piece and also the collaboration with the eighth grade which will be ongoing just I think to have that skill set and really apply that we’ve also in in we’ve developed some interventions with uh Ela in English and the magic block really unintended consequences now it wasn’t designed for abbreviation in in putting together um ways to help students but it is helping students so the feedback I’m receiving from students and from teachers if they have time to work with students although not focused on MCAS but you’re getting now that that relationship

42:55 relationship relationship so I think the next steps we’ve all gone through item analysis we’re digging down deep and certainly the essay portion and the writing piece was an area that we did we haven’t done as well as we typically do so big focuses on that and really I think again getting into just that piece where um we’re able to utilize the spoken sequence too to calibrate the skills and really get on the same page I think is really important so um I think it’s important I’ll talk more about interventions that we’ve put in over the last couple of years that I think will pay off dividends but um you know I’m looking forward to the skills of the scores bouncing back for sure right next slide please excuse me

43:43 so our math is an area that we took a pretty good fall for the uh 22 um 20 drop there overall but still higher than the state average again higher than the NEC average students with disabilities were 11 the state average um and I think if I were to quote Mike giardi or lead math teacher um math is a contact sport right it is a skill base you have to get in there and you have to work at it and continuity is so important and just seeing students if you walk through our classrooms now it’s much different than it was two years ago right get back into groups they’re utilizing natural vocabulary which if you expressing yourself with the math vocabulary that forces deeper thinking as well they’re getting in the deeper problem solving they’re collaborating

44:29 things that just weren’t happening um and I think the other part too is when you look at the math MCAS every year we evaluate the standards that the questions that are being asked but sometimes there’s more weight and one area geometry may vary with the amount of questions that are asked and there are a healthy number of geometry questions and the big question to us is the Freshman that took geometry two two years prior how did they fare you know when they’re really going through a tough time but I think at the end of the day um you know the intervention of math RTI which we believe is going to be very helpful and also some other work that is being done I’ll speak about at the end in terms of interventions uh the item analysis is always helpful but a slope and sequence is really great for the

45:16 alignment piece and continuity and remember our MCAS math testing date is in March right so if you look at the scope and sequence for example if a unit that is really focused on on the MCAS test is really hot afterwards because it could vary from your year you’re at a disadvantage so we always make adjustments basically I think it speaks to what you’re saying too the concern was when we start in our calendar compared to other districts and the number of days in a classroom prior to these testings even if it’s two or three days less

46:02 by the time they sit for their question was the AP versus this we may not have gotten to a a portion of a unit or whatever it’s just we can’t do in you know 120 days but in another District in 125 you just you can’t is this a concern you have or no not necessarily I think it’s more uh it just gives more perspective than numbers it gets more perspective to the performance of where we are and I’ll talk more about that in science because they found a pattern there too that didn’t quite match as well as it could in terms of the timing of the question I just wanted to make sure because in January we wrote a calendar it if we should be looking at you know this year we started a little later with starting earlier give our

46:47 students time to cover more materials before they take these tests you know I think is um the more time we have with our teachers and working is always beneficial but when you’re talking this piece I think it goes back to the scope and sequence and just looking and looking for patterns over time we’re always trying to guesstimate what they’ll be asking in terms of the amount of questions on the standard so we’re always working on that piece so I think it’s important that we look at um you know and again that geometry piece it runs through our mind refreshed and really having a tough schedule but next year they’re in algebra two you know how much were they able to retain in that geometry that really was weighted more heavily in that test okay so I think that’s important to note too the area too that we always talk about

47:33 is shorter answers and more open response work in math that requires stamina and I really believe confidence and endurance with students and and it really and working on those skills that was something a big emphasis pre-coded um and obviously working to improve in that area so I think there’s definitely a lot of almost there and certainly there’s a lot of good hidden data that not only is provide information for us to shape or move forward more importantly to see there are some celebrations hidden in there for sure next slide Frank please um biology um biology biology is interesting because I think the big thing to note is we did well on State Standards way above um please note though that the test

48:19 itself went from the Legacy test which was paper pencil so last year’s freshman was the first year of the Next Generation test which was electronic right um again we did well I think overall comparatively to our peers in the conference uh in our high needs population did very well above the state average um I think the big piece though is that testing Style and our team Gove into it and really came the realization pretty quickly that we we didn’t do enough preparation in that type of testing style it gives students an opportunity to work through that the last thing you wanted when you take a test is to really kind of work through it just the skill of taking tests right the piece of preparation is so important so they’re trying to implement more of that this moving forward I think the other piece too is

49:06 the item analysis and I gave some specifics in the next steps to cell division and genetics um they’re looking at the timing of where those are um and certainly want to make sure that those units are really probably more closer to the testing which in this case is in June the profession

49:25 um they too talk we’ve always talked about short answerable responses for science the ways we can improve the stamina and skill required for that and and again the back to your point Sarah the executive function like being able to organize that in plan so um again the collaboration with that in that particular area when the freshmen come in is really about the skills that are required not necessarily about content um but there’s some data that’s not on um just the last slide thank you Frank um I do want to point out one item that is just digging down these that I think is is great we always talk about achievement Gap so just thinking down with the students on IEP student disabilities IEP or 504s you know we we

50:10 have a pretty good Gap and just to throw some data at you last year we actually closed the Gap um on the ELA and the math test so if you take a look at the the way we looked at it is the students that scored proficient in ela that are not on the Nike or 504 versus the students that are 9504 that’s so proficient the Gap went from 33.6 a year before down to 20.1 so We Shrunk it considerably not we’re not there yet not by many means but I think that that’s something that should be celebrated the other piece in math is we went from 47.7 last year or the year before to 21.4 so reduction of 26.3 so that’s a pretty good drop there

50:56 and I I think we have some items that we put in for interventions that can tell that story too um biology there’s nothing to compare really that because it’s next generation and that’s that but that Gap last year was 17.5 so that’s again we have work to do for sure and obviously the pieces of inclusion which ties back to what we’re trying to do and everything so I’m just going to post off some items that we’ve implemented over the last two years some have budget implications too first of all we’ve implemented an RTI tier three model for English Math and Science this year it’s all new so we’ll see how that really takes we’ve been able to identify students who may struggle based upon data recommendations from the middle school and putting in early

1:10:23 so I’ll start anyways while we get that up um so this is actually the first quarter financial report I’m going to do the full full Financial reports each quarter and then do monthly updates so this is actually the September 30th financial report with um October narrative updates because of the timing of it so as of September 30th we had spent 10.9 of the FY 23 operating budget um and as of October 31st we had spent 18.7 of the operating budget this reporting packet also includes a grant and revolving status report this is the first time you’ll see this um on a quarterly or mid-year basis and you

1:11:09 will continue to receive this each quarter because I think it’s really important that the committee as well as the public realize how much of our operating costs really come from our grant and revolving funds and if those sources should ever go away um we either need to make drastic changes or those are items that need to be moved into our operating budget so it costs more than our 43 million dollar budget to operate our schools so I think it’s really important to to have that that information out there um so for this quarterly report we continue to have some operating vacancies which is really our our biggest challenge at this time

1:11:55 um as of the snapshot that this was taken on Monday the 28th we had 30 Staffing vacancies 14 of those vacancies were in the areas of Paris and tutors since that time we’ve actually filled four of those vacancies so it literally was a snapshot in time and we continue to fill some of those vacancies I do want to mention that having these vacancies does not necessarily mean that it’s cost savings to us these are positions that are absolutely needed whether it be in operations or it be in our teaching area um we do have costs such as substitute teacher costs contracted service costs to fill these gaps and sometimes you

1:12:41 need to have um compensatory services that we need to provide to families in lieu of having these Staffing Staffing members on available to meet our student needs so certainly we have the vacancies we may not be spending the money in the area of payroll but we are paying to make meet our students needs so some other areas that we’re going to continue to watch throughout this year that I’ve already identified is substitutes we certainly have a number of teaching vacancies that we are filling some even power vacancies we have had to fill just because of the lack of bodies in the classrooms another area is custodian salaries and custodian over time we

1:13:28 currently have four custodian vacancies we are filling two of those vacancies with contracted services at a cost which is much more substantial than our payroll cost would normally be so trying to do what we can with what we have and just lack of bodies I do want to mention that in terms of bus drivers we have actually recently filled our last two bus driver positions they are being trained and and in process of obtaining the full biased driver licenses so hopefully we will be able to fully um satisfy our pay to ride list and actually offer up more positions

1:14:13 or student positions to ride the buses um still that will remain at the elementary level only um as we do not have the Staffing or the buses to extend that into middle and high school at this time

1:14:28 um another area is utilities as we all know utilities are continually increasing um we do have our gas rates locked in through March however our luck expires in the middle of March um have a meeting about that next week and we will be doing a projection regarding our utility cost for the remainder of this year in the next quarterly update unemployment costs was actually a surprise to me this year a little bit we did increase that budget but so far we have actually spent about 48 percent of that budget the good thing is that most of the claims that we currently have will not be a full year claim because unemployment benefits are only um eligible for 26 weeks of benefits at

1:15:15 this time so that cost will not increase at the current rate it’s being incurred and lastly uh the biggest challenge we’re having in terms of the budget is out of District transportation and tuition costs no surprise given the Mental Health crisis that’s occurring initially we had budgeted a total cost of 690 000 for our out of District transportation our current projection is 1.1 million so we have a shortfall of 458 000 in this budget and our out of District tuitions we had budgeted 3.5 million which actually included a 500 000 buffer um but our current projected needs are just over four million dollars so our shortfall is just over half a million

1:16:01 dollars even with those staggering figures and staggering shortfalls we are actually in decent shape I don’t want to say we’re in fabulous shape um but we did have some carryovers last year we were able to prepay out of district tuitions and to the tune of 250 000 dollars which will decrease some of that cost we carried over 820 000 in our circuit breaker revolving fund and we had a hundred and sixty thousand dollars in tuition revolving funds um and lastly our circuit breaker reimbursement was just approved at 220 000 higher than budgeted um ideally I don’t want to say these for any surprise because typically um the goal is to maintain a balance of approximately a million dollars in the

1:16:47 circuit breaker fund um we are able to carry forward one year’s Revenue um to offset the following Year’s cost which is actually a really great tool for fiscal management great fiscal management and that’s our goal however so far we’ve had to dip into that eight hundred and twenty thousand dollar carry forward and our Surplus are available funds to cover this right now is um 478 000. I do want to mention that this does not include the special ed Reserve fund of 250 000 which is always available to us for any unexpected special education costs um so we’re in decent shape right now hopefully things will improve but

1:17:34 um I did want to you know bring you up to to speed on that and tell you how we’re covering these shortfalls so far um hopefully the available balance of that 478 000 will will get better and not worse and then hopefully we will be able to have some other cost saving measures throughout the year that we will be able to carry forward into the next fiscal year but this does lead to a little bit more of a challenge in budgeting for our next fiscal year as we do not necessarily have the Reserves to count on as a buffer for next year for unexpected out of District costs if there’s any questions please let me know
