1:35 don’t see anybody’s hand up online no one else in the audience so we will move on to our student representative the first meeting welcome thank you hi everyone if you don’t know me I’m Alan zetto and there’s just a few updates about the high school since we just went back to school this Tuesday but it’s been a successful first three days everybody is transitioning very well the freshmen are being helped by the PE Mentor program which has been very successful I’m a peer mentor myself and I think it’s been going very well freshmen are finding their way around um our picture day will be on September 13th and also we have the first Razer fundraiser for the senior class which is on Tuesday September 5th from 5: to 9M

2:21 and 30% of the order goes to the senior class that’s about all thank you thank you you so much great job we look forward to working with you and hearing from you all year yeah exited as well okay thank okay next we’re going to go to our fearless superintendent we to thank you so much chairwoman Madam chairwoman um uh so I WR I wrote some things out because I didn’t want to miss anybody and the reason I didn’t do my accommodations at the beginning is because uh I I kind of wo in a lot of thanks and appreciation in my updat that you here um now so firstly I want to thank our custodians and maintenance staff workers for their hard work and getting getting the schools ready to receive staff and students to Bloodgood our facilities director made sure

3:06 projects were moving toward fruition with oversight and collaboration for Mike piffling our assisted superintendent of finance and operations C pych our director of technology and his staff have done yman work and ensuring our technology is functioning accordingly across the district our secretary’s Administrative Assistant Works tirelessly to get systems going for the start of the school year which is hugely appreciated our new admin team has been working well to navigate the and outs the marel head schools and our veteran admins have been outstanding in in guiding the way so thank you all for that um prior to the start the school year proper Julia Ferrera Matt Fox Scott Williams Frank Kowski Michelle Carlson Lindsey Donaldson Katie duac and Jeff Nome join myself and Meco director Kia

3:52 Johnson at um their headquarters in Boston to do meet and greet with the families and the childrens that are part of our Meco program it was a great evening and K did a nice job of making sure it was a great turnout and that everyone was well attended to so thank you for a great night and taking the time to make those connections it was really cool to see um the kids you know enjoying seeing folks they knew and being welcomed um as new students and and families it was really neat uh we welcome new staff to the district on Wednesday August 28th there are a lot of happy and excited folks ready to join our team Julia did a great job along with Sally um Chevy orchestrating the day and providing them with some swag some mentoring information training and general information has began to navigate Marblehead it was a great way for the new folks to be acclimated to our district um it was

4:38 really positive day I think went really well um on Thursday August 29th I began the day welcoming staff to the start of the school year at vets auditorium there was a lot of positivity in the message of reflect rejuvenate and rebuild was well received um John Constantino Our Food Services director provided peas trees muffins juice and water for the masses which was great um and uh well appreciated um start school of students beginning on third has gone well overall of course there are always some bumps in the road that we need to work through students transitioning to new schools and having new expectations and routines can sometimes be overwhelming but I’m confident that our that we are moving forward in a positive direction our assistant superintendent of student services Lisa Maria pedo and assistant

5:24 director of student services Victoria Ryan have been working diligently throughout the summer along with our team chairs to review special education processes programming and training needs there’s a lot of work to be done but I know that the hard work and dedication of the administrators and all of our outstanding staff will yield great results as the year unfolds we’re hoping for some Grace and understanding as we take the time necessary to revamp things districtwide um and some of the just there’s a lot of stuff going on special like far too much to talk about right now but some of the things where you know the case managers are going to be emailing out um to the parents all the members of their children’s teams and their contact information which I think would be nice for their communication and collaboration um then that’s just one example of some of that some things

6:09 that Lisa Marie and Victoria are trying to put in place um so the communication and collaboration is I think um becoming um ingrained what we’re doing um I also want to recognize that the bus routes are taking a little bit longer than we and the parents would like but please know that we’re looking into efficiencies at the schools that will hopefully address those concerns thank you for your patience thank you too to Lisa Manning who were working hard to get things running smoothly along with Todd and the principles we uh talked we you know there’s some concerns from parents that were shared that the kids were on the bus for qu quite a while the bus RS were a little changed up a little bit this year um and realistically it’s first day of school and then we had kindergarteners which is the second day of school which you know we have to make sure all the kiddos have their names and know where they’re going and what buses so there was a little bit of lag time I think it went better today um we had

6:56 some better communication we walkie-talkie saying the bus is leaving this school they’re heading to that school we can get the kids lined up and ready um so I think that’s already starting to go better so I appreciate um parents and folks patience with that uh fall sports are in full swing and we’re hoping for continued success of our student athletes thanks to Kent wheeler our new ad for coordinating the start of our athletic season along with all all of our coaches I know that our student athletes are in good hands I also thought it prudent to give a quick update on an independent investigation into the Personnel issues and allegations several staff members have moved on from Marblehead Head um but have moved on from Marblehead um but Alison Kirk will continue to work with those that are willing to do so in order to come to some conclusions and offer insight and potential solution development and I will provide updates as things progress in in that realm here

7:43 in public and uh and just uh kind of continue those conversations um been having a lot of conversations with community members and uh parents and caregivers um and I think we’re in a really good place with understanding of some of the cons you know more global concerns and how we um how we operate um with a different mindset the schools and how we you know a lot of my opening day comments the staff were you know um making sure you have a sense of belonging that people are um you know are welcomed to our school both staff students um caregivers anyone that has a part of our school community and to really start really you know we ask the kids when you see something say something we need to make sure as adults that we’re modeling that behavior for our students as well if students are you know um adults are adding acting um in

8:30 you know the way they they not want to be active they can’t really hold students accountable so um you know just talking about some of those things I think is important I just want to kind of share where we are with that with that investigation that’s been a topic of conversation for a while I do not have a a timeline for completion I had a very likely conversation with Allison yesterday about um steps she’s taking so I just wanted to share that um and finally I’d like to thank all our students staff caregivers and community members who have offered their warm welcome to me for joining the Marblehead School Community I look forward to head School Community I look forward to all the great things a lie ahead thank you that’s all I have thank you uh so next we will go on to consent action and agenda items we have our schedule of

9:58 Z okay the next is our school nurse Tire I’m gonna sure I believe um Jessica is joining us um I think she’s under Mass hospice if I’m correct is that correct hi John yeah that’s me you’re a little on my screen I I think that’s Jessica um so Jessica was recommended as um the the final nurse um for our schools um to me at the beginning of the school year we move forward with her with her hire um to come in at Leber and I spoke with Megan our nurse leader to make sure that Jessica is you know getting all the supports and everything that she needs and role as um as a school nurse and I’m confident that she’ll be able to move forward and um continue provide services

11:00 there he Jeff hi Sarah um so my question I’ve been asking every nurse for the last few years is just because we did run into a little profle where we didn’t check this um I did see that uh your mass lure was in there but I just want to confirm you have a Desi license so I don’t currently have a Desi license I am just waiting on one more employment verification to proceed with my lenser so that’s just a little bit of a glitch but as soon as I get that document in I will be signing up to take all of the required testing to do that okay um and John just to confirm um without the desie lure she can only work in a building where there is a Desy license nurse so she needs to

11:46 be it’s just like um it would be as if we had you know if there was a student teacher they have to work under somebody else’s license so that’s in place and it’s you know a license is pending at this point so we did have the discussion upon her coming in okay um so you know I’m confident that we’ll be able to for license that you know having the RN license in my opinion is um you know obviously that the really important the Desy license obviously uh we have to have that in place but it’s it’s impending status at this point continue to have that conversation just forward right I just want to make sure that we’re um it was two three years ago this was a significant um hurdle for us where we it’s yeah we we have we have time frame we have time

18:26 passes five to zero huge thank you and shout out to the Board of Health for this incredibly generous and helpful donation next so um so Ken wheeler let me know that he he had um gotten a donation of an ad from Julie Walker who runs um Walker Foundation um there was a senior project that was done by some of our was our senior seni senior project um and they they raised my understand they raised money for the for the ad and they wanted to donate to the school so we have um so the with the committee’s approval we’ll um put that a into the um into the mixer EDS I believe it’s slated to go to the Village School out the back um it’s always good to have an extra one um

20:14 wonderful the next one is um so free period and and on the agenda it’s spelled out period but the company is actually free with the period like dot um they have decide to um donate menal menal products um for our school buildings um and there will be actually we’ve already re receiving them as soon as the um school committee approves it we will disseminate them to the junior high and high school there’s 12,000 pads for 4,800 tampons 48,000 liners 12 dispensers and then there’s three books that were um gifted as well the Jessica and the AL teraso books um a kids book about periods is written for an elementary level an adult reader um free perod is published by Scholastics and the other one was free per is a dire Wy

20:59 kid meets the babysitter kind of book that’s I always described so it’s always it’s always um nice to have the extra things for especially for the younger students who may just be experiencing um that part of their life for the first time so I I’m I’m happy that we’re able to get this donation um it’s my understanding that eventually we’re gonna have to provide these um these products anyway so it’s nice to get kind of a you know um materials already to start that and then we’ll move forward with uh you know as we go we get an idea of how much are being used and how often and our this would be a nice way to be able to understand you know how how much of the products being used so are these going to um village as well um I think they were slated for

22:31 character in Diary of wom kid talk about this so I would like to I just let me make a quick comment Alis I think it’s um thanks Sarah for for recognizing Megan Sweeney from PowerUp she actually originally came to us um earlier uh well last year um to ask for our support which we gave uh unanimously uh for the I am bill which was a bill before the state legislature to require um schools and prisons um to Pro to provide these product Nal products um in our buildings um it did not in the Scurry of things at the last minute in July it did not make it out of um committee so it didn’t pass so she actually Megan actually passed us on to this organization which is actually affiliated with a I believe a church

23:17 down in Hingham that is doing this donation but it’s still out there on the state level so just so to give folks a quick update um and hopefully it’ll make its way around this you know this time too so that um there wasn’t any discussion of funding so I think the idea was that the legislation would require it but it would likely have to come from the budgets of the individual um you know organizations uh required to do it so we you know we will need to you know hopefully start providing this once the donations are up so thanks okay so I have a call for a motion to approve the donation from free period which it will provide menstrual products for the high school and soov

25:36 you start you have to you know bit it out and everything else um when I was speaking with Mike he’s he’s looked into that a little bit and it’s it’s should cover all if not you both of just just so you know Al I just want I think that was Al that asked the question I reached out to Muffy when I saw this donation last week or the week before because um we did accept a donation for work on our tennis courts I believe it was two years ago so I was just wanted to clarify so she had indicated that they did a lot of work on the courts I think they did the Nets and the fencing and stuff um and the and the surface a couple of years ago they did not replace the entire court they just repaired resurfaced it and it needs to be done again I guess there’s cracks and stuff so she did not indicate to me at that time that it wouldn’t be enough I think that the the

26:21 Fund Raising that they did was enough to cover the repair um and it’s probably you know at some point worth the conversation you know those courts are 20 plus years old whether they the courts themselves will eventually need to be replaced but my understanding is that’s enough right now to repair them yeah I wanted to bring that up so when this came about two three years ago a a very large sum I want to say it was like a maybe 180 it was a large sum of money um in to update the courts at that point ironically because I just commanded her Katie Martin spoke at the meeting saying she didn’t think the scope was wide enough and we’ll be back here replacing them a couple years later she said from her subject matter expertise that you really needed to dig

27:06 out the entire sub grade underneath and relay to truly get to the root of the problem or you’re going to keep just patching and fixing um and I think that’s what we’re seeing here so I I do appreciate this and I appreciate everything miy does so I I think we should go forward with this but as we Lo look at our long-term visioning I think we really need to look at fixing that actual subgrade problem right from the get-go and um and kind of as we look at updating and fixing things as we go along look at the long-term fixes that might frontload a little higher cost but over time it’s you know that pay now or pay later price so I I do think this continues to come up can I ask a question John when is

29:19 tonight hello I’m Julia teaching learning and I am here with Angela Gano um and we had the honor of being the co- facilitators of the social emotional learning curriculum committee um this summer and it was a really really enjoyable inspiring experience and we’re here to present on that this evening so Frank has some slides that we’re going to add um as we go through we waiting for those slides to come up would you mind sharing who were the collaborators on that committee absolutely have it in the slides I’m sorry I when I went in today at 3 all right while we’re waiting this is how we’re going to end but we’ll say thank thank you first um um first I want to say thank you to John and his tremendous support he has been a

30:54 Frank so as we just mentioned we’re gonna um go back a one more sorry Frank thank you um as we just mentioned team of classroom teachers mental health clinicians school counselors um Health teachers administrators uh we came together this summer to do a very comprehensive review of our seal curriculum and that s for social emotion learning one more sorry Frank thank

31:50 you so as we were looking at the the curriculum we we really started with looking at um what systems we have in place in Marblehead and what our needs are so we were looking at our MPS structure and what we have in place for that is a lot of academic materials and supports and we want to topl the child so we really looking for something that would help us support child um we looked at data from the high school we looked at data that teachers supply with us about what they felt like the needs were in our schools at this time um we looked at DES content standards um we kept a lens of wanting to have this an aligned program kindergarten through 12th grade would didn’t want to pece meal together different programs we wanted one that would be cohesive and have the same message year after year um we know we had obligations for the student

32:36 opportunities act the initiative number one um and we have a school committee bullying prevention policy that we need to address so we’re looking at all of those things and trying to find something that would help us address everything so after hours and hours and days and days of meeting next side we as a committee selected and would like to share with you um today about um wayfinder that is the the team’s recommendation for the newly adopted curriculum

33:18 Frank so we are confident that wayfinder ability to help strengthen and grow our students of social emotional skills because of the way that they worked and dedicated the time to designing and making a product for all students with age appropriate content that will resonate with our students as well as an easy implementation process for

33:43 educators so again we were keeping a lot of things in mind as we were looking at these programs um we at the top of our list were the things that we had obligations to besides our students um we have the policy which is sa here for the school committee we wanted to find something that had strong reviews from parents uh teachers and students and so um wayfinder was reviewed on Common Sense

34:10 education looked at yesterday um it is very aligned it is a castle select program Castle is an organization that is dedicated to promoting um evidence-based education in schol so this is now a castle select program um it had high ratings from students from the rise Scholars Program it is vetted by the Stanford education center Ed adolescence and the har Harvard diesel lab um they do continuous reviews yearly on this program to see how how it is to the students and they find every year that the students the castle has different competency categories and that they find that students improve on Those comp

35:33 five seven there we are um we are excited to share um more about the actual skills that are being taught through the wayfinder program um so on the slide here you can see that it does it’s align with the castle as mentioned self- awareness collaboration and empathy and then they’ve also partnered that with Future Ready skills wayfinder believes that a sense of purpose and belonging is what helps Drive students well-being and and their connectedness and their sense of belonging um so the curricular theme support students to meaning meaningfully connect with their inner selves their local communities in The Wider World they’ve researched um six core skills that go beyond your typical sccl competencies to incorporate those meaning making life riness and

36:19 critical thinking skills in order to connect classroom learning to the real on the next slide um you’ll see the journey and the idea here and it connected to the you know the name itself of finding your way wayfinder right they believe in this theory of change that once you as a student you feel that s belonging and you know then what’s important to you so you add those together and you know what you care about in the world then that’s going to give you a great sense of purpose and learn how to act with that purpose um wayfinder aligns with our Positive Behavior Support Systems that we have in place as well as our responsive classroom model so so it really does complement the work that we’re already doing to instill a sense of belonging with our students we

37:05 believe that when the students when they do have a experience belonging and understanding what’s meaningful to them then they’re going to be able to act with purpose and contribute to a more productive safe not the world as John said earlier as well that is something that we are talking about as adults as well um and making sure that we have that sense of belonging so this definitely align with everything that virtue with nurs this gives you a peek into the scope and sequence of the themes of the lessons at each gr level uh in grades the Elementary grades there’s 20 core lessons and they’re about 20 minutes each um in middle school there’s 26 lessons for about 30 minutes each and in high school there are 23 core lessons at

1:17:12 you’re on or security subcommittee um we have uh had a communication subcommittee for the last few months um we have a Medco liaison we have a CPAC liaison and there in the past and we can Sarah again has some historical know I do a little bit too we did have school advisory Council Liaisons those were school committee members liaz to the different building uh School advisory councils I believe those liaison were eliminated Sarah at some point a few years ago yes so there’s also health and wellness oh Health uh health and wellness has that existed I don’t I didn’t know that that was so exist um Megan was the Le on last year so I I think when you know she left that kind

1:17:59 of fell off a little bit okay but health and wellness and safety are superintendent advisory committees um and then the the sa’s which used to be site based and then became sa’s and we had for years and years and about three four years ago we dissolved um the involvement of school committee members on it I will say from my opinion it was immensely productive to be um a to to see that the way the school Improvement plans are being made the why behind them the work that is done at that at those meetings it was really valuable at least for my perspective um from both sitting

1:18:46 on a school advisory Council not being on the school committee as well as being on the school committee I I played both roles and when what was that here I was a parent on a school advisory Council before I got in the school committee and it was really helpful M Tedford was our leason at that point she would kind of explain like as a group we would say well we want to do this or why can’t we do this and meth would really help explain the mechanisms behind it because I I do think what we hear a lot now is people will just do this and they don’t understand the limitations of the school committee or budgets or this or that so it was really really helpful I thought from both sides of the table um and I I was always opposed to dissolve

1:19:31 so yeah these are the school advisory committees that the principles hold that correct yes so there’ be one for each right I thought we got rid of those for a reason I thought the principl actually I know when I was a principal a school committee person sitting in that meeting always exerted a tremendous amount of pressure even though they didn’t want to influence the direction of the school advisory just being there being on the spooking is it a certain push and that’s why when I was principal I didn’t like it and I know most principles would rather not have uh so I think that would be a great piece of feedback to hear from from other principles if they’re comfortable sharing that I think that that stigma it

1:20:18 well my opinion is that I would like to push past that stigma I understand there’s history and and all of that um but I would I would like to push past that so that it is not thought assumed that the school committee attending a meeting is trying to usurp or go against or not work in tandem with whatever um the administration of that school feels I do think it’s nice also because I I remember I think I had one meeting where it was still a thing um and I remember hearing the feedback from each school was also really nice it was nice for not only nice for us to hear it as a school committee but I think for the community to
